At Vega, sourcing ingredients for our protein blend involves many factors, including quality, availability of the quantity we demand, and finding those ingredients as locally as possible (within North America). Rather than choose single protein source for Vega One® All-in-One Shake, we create a multisource, complete plant-based protein blend with a well-rounded amino acid profile.
A lactose-free plant-based protein source, yellow pea protein has a complementary amino acid profile to hemp protein (you’ll read about it next!). North American and European pea protein is the number one ingredient in Vega One All-in-One Shake (making up the bulk of the formula).
The hemp protein you find in Vega One shakes is cold-pressed with no heat applied in its processing. Hemp protein contains all amino acids— including all essential amino acids—making it a complete protein. However, to offer a well-balanced amino acid profile in Vega One All-in-One Shake, we pair it with the other proteins in the blend.
Our hemp protein is sourced from a North American family farm with sustainable growing practices. Sustainability is something important to Vega. And it’s important to this family farm, too—they waste nothing in growing their hemp crop. The plants are grown naturally and every part of the plant is used, from the seed to the roots (which are used to replenish the soil).
Flaxseeds are well known for their Omega-3 ALA content, as well as their soluble and insoluble fiber. But did you know flaxseeds also have protein? That’s right: flaxseeds are 15-23% protein by weight, making them a great addition to Vega One’s protein blend. Our flaxseeds are sourced from the Canadian prairies, practically in our own backyard. Plus, the flaxseeds in Vega One All-in-One Shake are micro-milled and flash-pasteurized to help maintain shelf stability.
Native to Peru, and naturally found in beautiful star-shaped pods, sacha inchi seeds are the higher in plant-based Omega-3 ALA than chia seeds or walnuts. Actually not a nut, sacha inchi seeds are referred to as Inca peanuts. (Though they actually grow on vines and farmed in a vineyard, kind of like grapes).
They also have more protein than most nuts or seeds, with 9 grams of protein per serving (1 ounce/28 grams). Sachi inchi seeds are sustainably grown in the Amazon rainforest in partnership with Peruvian farmers. (Learn more about the SaviSeed story here).
