We’re in the thick of winter, and let’s be honest: the dark, cold mornings can make it really difficult to throw back the covers and take on the day. If this sounds like a problem you’re currently facing, I have three tips to help you begin the morning with a more energetic start:

  1. Drink water

Think about it: If you go to bed at 10PM and wake up at 6AM, that’s 8 whole hours that you’ve gone without drinking anything. Depending on your water intake the previous day, there’s a good chance that you wake up dehydrated. Make it a priority to drink a glass of water upon getting out of bed. You can even add a squeeze of lemon, lime or fresh orange juice for added energizing benefits.

  1. Get fresh air

Ok, I know running outside upon waking in the middle of winter doesn’t sound very appealing, but you can’t deny that it would wake you up pretty fast, right? Even if it’s just a quick walk around the block after breakfast or shoveling the driveway, getting some fresh air will help to make you more alert. Feel free to bring a travel mug of hot tea if you like!

  1. Enjoy a nutrient-dense breakfast

This might sound like common sense, but so many people neglect breakfast so it’s worth repeating. Why not use nutrition to your advantage, and let it provide you with energy rather than suck it away? One of my favorite seasonal smoothie ingredients at this time of year is mandarin oranges. Their scent is uplifting and energizing, and they’re also loaded with vitamin C which is perfect for keeping our immune systems strong. Combined with nutrient dense Vega Protein & Greens, this little concoction will be a breakfast you look forward to when the alarm goes off!

Ingredients

  • 1 scoop Vanilla Vega® Protein & Greens
  • 3 small or 2 medium mandarin oranges, peeled
  • 1 cup Silk® unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tsp dried ginger
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4-5 ice cubes

Preparation

  1. Add all ingredients except for the ice to your blender and blend until completely smooth.

  2. Toss in a few ice cubes and continue blending, adjusting the thickness by adding more if you wish.

  3. Pour into a tall glass and serve garnished with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon if you like.
