Healthy doesn’t have to mean boring bland salads, or mind-numbing workouts you hate. Try to fin something that gets you super pumped and excited about your overall wellness. So how does this foodie eat out? Well I’ll share some of my secrets with you:
Get your geek on
When choosing a restaurant for the evening I do some major research:
- I like to scope out the best restaurants for the specific area of the city I want to dine in. My favorite way to do so is finding a favorite local food blogger to check out where they’re eating, Google or check Yelp to find restaurants and
- I narrow my choice down to the style or ethnicity of food I’m craving by channeling my inner hunger pangs. What kind of food do I really feel like?
- Once I’ve narrowed down my eateries, I research. I’ll look ahead to see what dishes these restaurants have to offer, how they rate on my healthy eating scale and assess if they’re unique enough for my taste buds.
I’ll look for alternative ways in cooking the average meal, I’ll look into how creatively ingredients are use, how fresh are the ingredients, how local the suppliers, and finally what reviews look like. By doing a little bit of research before you head out, you’ll be sure to get what you’re looking for, while saving yourself any disappointment.
Don’t get fried out
Now, I’ll have to admit, I’m a sucker when it comes a good yam fry or French fry. But when you love to eat out as much as I do, you gotta look for things that are baked not fried. Sure the frying adds a crispy element...but if you have someone that really knows what they’re talking about, they’ll make you want to give up your deep fryer desires. Have you ever tried asparagus fries?? Or what about avocado fries?? Just sayin’, they’re a real treat, and a less starchy option then their popular counterpart. Instead of having deep fried tortilla chips with your prize winning guacamole, you might be able to find a restaurant that bakes their own tortillas, or better yet...has a dehydrator and has made their own chips, crackers or tortillas form fresh veggies, nuts and seeds.
You want it, you got it
You know that feeling when you see something on the menu that totally catches your eye, and once you start reading through the description you see something that makes you want to toss in the towel and choose something else. That Portobello mushroom burger was just screaming your name until you read about the huge white fluffy bun it’s served on. Well fret no more, and believe it or not, you do have options. Ask your server if you can swap out that bun for a lettuce wrap, or just have that Portobello patty straight up. Small changes and swaps can be great for getting exactly what you want with your dietary needs and nutritional desires. One thing to keep in mind is that the chef has created this meal to his idea of perfection, so be respectable and don’t recreate a masterpiece. This is also where secret tip number one, can come in handy: research the spot, so you know what you’re working with.
