Calcium is an essential mineral used by your body. You need it to build and maintain healthy bones and teeth, to facilitate nerve conduction and muscle contraction—and more. The daily calcium requirement for adults is 1000mg.

When your body does not get enough calcium from your diet, it can borrow the calcium it needs from your bones. While this might seem like a clever trick on your body’s part, it’s not nearly a perfect solution. There’s a long-term cost to constantly sourcing calcium from your bones—it can lead to softening of your bones. 1National Institute of Health. 2013. Calcium Fact Sheet Accessed on 12/02/2014 from:

Dietary Calcium (and When to Supplement)

The good news is that most non-dairy milks are fortified with calcium (sometimes with even higher levels than their dairy counterparts). Other calcium-rich food sources include vegetables, such as leafy greens, legumes, nuts and grains. 2National Institute of Health. 2013. Calcium Fact Sheet Accessed on 12/02/2014 from:

While getting your vitamins and minerals from food is ideal, sometimes you need a more. (If you’re a teenager, pregnant, or over 50 this can encompass menopausal, your calcium needs are higher than 1,000mg). Vega One’s  source of supplemental calcium is organic marine algae.

What is Marine Algae Calcium?

Organic marine algae calcium is a unique plant source calcium and mineral complex, made from a wild-harvested marine algae found in the Atlantic. A particular species of marine algae (Algas Calcareas) draws calcium and other minerals from sea water by attaching itself to pieces of seaweed and digesting the minerals from the water. As the tiny algae attaches to the seaweed and collects the minerals it slowly grows in size, eventually growing to about the size of your hand. When fully-grown, the algae naturally washes up on the beach, where local residents collect it in small, sustainable batches. After being picked and cleaned on shore, the plant is minimally processed by being dried by the sun and ground within 48 hours.

In each serving of Vega One™ nutritional shake   you’ll find 20% of your daily recommended calcium intake, coming from organic marine algae calcium.
