Top 5 ways to hold yourself accountable to your goals

By Sarah Wilson, RHN on January 23, 2016 , categorized in Inspiration, Put Yourself First

There are certain times of your day or year when you feel super inspired to make things happen, take life by the reins and get stuff done. As time goes on, you notice that the inspiration fizzles, your gusto falls by the wayside, those goals you wanted to accomplish no longer seem like a reality. Let’s take a second to put on the breaks, hit the rewind and evaluate where we lost our mojo, give ourselves a pep talk and hold ourselves accountable. We can accomplish anything we set our minds to, no goal is too big, or to daunting, that we can’t crush. Sometimes we just need a little help, reinforcement and guidance. Here are my top five ways to reach your goals.

1. Procrasti-what now?

Let’s face it, no one likes a procrastinator. Heck, I can’t even stand myself when I know I’m not getting things done when I said I would. Stop the procrastination and make a timeline as to what you want to accomplish and when you want to have it done by. If you need to set reminders in your phone that at 9AM you’re going to do some research into your next business venture, or work on your handstands. Make yourself a schedule and stick to it.

2. List-en up

At the start of each week, write yourself a list of things you want to accomplish. Just the act of writing these tasks down, will give you an idea of what you’ll need to do to help you reach your goal. Just even the task of writing it down will increase your chances of getting it done.

3. Start a support group

Your friends and family want nothing more than for you to succeed. Fill them in, and the let them know what goals you want to reach. Make sure they know that you need their help in keeping you motivated, whether it’s a weekly pep talk or help in making connections. With a solid support team around you, you’ll be able to build yourself up and take on any challenges that come your way. That’s what friends are for. Sometimes all it takes is an encouraging nudge from someone that just gets you.

4. If you build it, they will come

It’s always great to have a visual representation of what you’re trying to achieve. That way you’ll be reminded on a daily basis of what this dream looks like, helping you make it a reality.  Take some of your favorite magazines and whip up a dream board, put a nice frame around it and voila, not only do you have motivation, you also have a work of art. Not into crafts? No problem, hop onto Pinterest and create a digital vision board using photos and inspirational quotes. Get creative and find something that will motivate you to take one step forward every day.

5. The mentor project

Do have that one person you admire? Someone you find to have inspired you to want more. Well if they’ve inspired you, chances are they’ve been inspired by someone else and realize the benefits of having a mentor to share words of wisdom with them along the way. If you find yourself stuck and are unsure of how to go about reaching your goals, let someone who’s been there before help you out. And give you that guidance you need to stay motivated and take on whatever comes your way.
