How to Do a Digital Detox

Our noses are in our phones and our eyes are always connected to a screen. In a world where we’re so connected digitally, sometimes it’s easy to forget that we have connections in the world outside of our digital lives that we need to make and maintain. We falter, at times, in being present to the people and experiences around us with each moment being looked upon as another moment we can share on Instagram. I’ve been guilty of this over and over and as someone who works in social media, I find I need to make a conscious choice to step away and have a break. That’s where a Digital Detox comes into play. What does this mean? You go cold tofurkey across all digital channels and ideally devices too! This could mean not using your phone at all, definitely no emails and no social media. Still not sure how to navigate it? Let’s break it down…

TIME OUT

I get it, we rely so heavily on our phones and connecting with people digitally that it may not always be so simple to just back away completely. Mobile usage for everything is on the rise and perhaps your work requires your attention more often through email or social, but that’s okay – we can keep this simple. Plan out time to do your detox. This can start as an afternoon off or, if you’re feeling more daring, go a whole day, or a weekend! Try a week–I dare you.

BUT HOW

Practice leaving your phone at home, that way you can’t have any desire to pick it up or even wonder what might be going on. Don’t turn on your tablet, laptop or desktop if you’re home. If you need to use your computer, just log out of all social media so if you “accidently” open up Facebook. Better yet, plan a trip that takes you cross-border or internationally and don’t opt into that roaming package for your phone. The crazy costs of logging data while you’re abroad will be enough of an incentive to not bother… plus you get to have an adventure! (It’s okay, even if you don’t share it on social media… the adventure still happened).

WHAT TO DO DURING THE DETOX

Kick it old school and grab that book you’ve been meaning to read forever, engage in some arts and crafts, start and finish that DIY project, invite friends over for dinner, host a wine tasting at your house, grab your friends and go on that road trip, journal, try something new, go for a run, hit the gym, learn something new… the options are actually endless.

I challenge you to try it, take a break from all things digital: disconnect to reconnect. You’re going to feel that much clearer and refreshed for it. I know I do every time I engage in a Digital Detox, I even feel more inspired. There’s a whole world out there just aching for you to dive into and soak up. All you need to do is look up.
