Eating fruits and veggies that are in season is a great way to load your meals and snacks with nutrient density and flavor! I like to head to the local farmers market and see what is available each week to make sure I’m getting the freshest foods available.
For the month of September (depending on where you live) I love to eat these seasonal foods raw!
1. White Sapotes
With an edible thin green skin, and a subtly sweet pear-banana hybrid taste, I love throwing white sapotes in smoothies to provide thickness. If you’re sick of banana in your smoothie this is a great alternative. This fruit is native to Mexico and Central America, so you may have to look in South American markets to find it.
Do not let this summer go by without tasting jicama! I still remember the first time I had it, about 8 years ago. With a mild earthy, sweet taste and refreshing crunch jicama makes a great snack, salad topping or even addition to a smoothie. Try chopping jicama up in sticks and squeezing lime juice on top; a quick, simple and low calorie snack.
I have fond memories of eating peaches in Georgia during my summer travels. I love to eat these juicy stone fruits just as they are and savor each bite, especially while sitting on the beach or in a park.
Personally I prefer raw zucchini over cooked. In September, gardens overflow with zucchini, so ask your neighbors if they have an extra-local one you can use! My two favorite quick an easy ways to prepare it is in hummus (substitute half of the tahini with a zucchini) or raw Italian Herb Pasta.
5. Swiss Chard
No list of September foods would be complete without a leafy green! I love chard’s light flavor and vibrant colors. They are a great way to sneak some greens into a smoothie without causing a bitter taste. Another great way to enjoy them is using them as a wrap; stuff with your favorite nut cheeses, veggies, walnut taco meat or other fillings and enjoy!
