A runner, cooking enthusiast and plant-focused flexitarian, Kim McDevitt has passionately built her career in nutrition. Noticing that her running performances were closely tied to what she was eating, Kim decided to study nutrition and pursue advanced degrees in Dietetics and Public Health, to better understand the power of food in performance. Today, Kim specializes in sports nutrition to enhance athletic performance and focuses on realistic and approachable ways for improving health through educated dietary choices within an active lifestyle.

What are some of your career goals?

I love living an active, healthy lifestyle and it’s been through small, consistent changes.  I hope to show people, through a variety of education channels,  that big changes in your life don’t make the difference – - but rather it is the culmination of small, realistic, and attainable steps you personally choose that can result in big, positive changes over time. I hope to continue my role in nutrition communication through both traditional and social media channels—including writing, blogging, and television appearances.

What are some of the staples in your grocery basket and pantry?

Chia seeds, buckwheat groats,  almond butter, unsweetened almond milk, leafy greens, and berries.

Favorite “Cheat Meal”?

Jelly Belly Jelly Beans!

What are some of your fitness goals?

To someday run a 1:30 half marathon, complete a triathlon, hike up Mt. Washington (NH), and ski down Tuckerman’s Ravine.

Favorite Pre or Post Workout Meal?

After a hard morning workout I love the following for breakfast:  Combine rolled oats, nut butter and 2 Tbsp Vega One Natural until it binds together. Add chopped seasonal fresh fruit, buckwheat groats, chia seeds, hemp hearts, cinnamon, ginger and honey to taste. Top with almond milk. So good!

Who do you admire as a lifestyle leader or athlete?

In the nutrition world, definitely Mark Bittman. He brilliantly blends my two passions, nutrition and cooking, into approachable language for everyone to understand and enjoy.  He is also an amazing  writer, blogger  and commentator providing insightful opinions and information about the latest nutrition studies, new products and more.

On a smaller, but almost more impactful scale, a favorite health and wellness blogger –The Fitnessista.  I admire her because she documents daily her personal adventure in discovering healthy eating, provides fun fitness tips and approachable workouts, and proves that living an active healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be a daily struggle, but rather a fun and fulfilling way to live. And, she’s an amazing blogger with a dedicated blog following…something I dream about!

What are some of your most memorable accomplishments in fitness and the outdoors?

Running my first marathon – Nike Women’s Marathon, San Francisco 2008 – and hitting my goal of completing in under 4 hours. Dedicating myself to months of solid training (fitness & nutrition), while tracking and noticing significant pace improvements in my half-marathon race time.

What’s the most spontaneous, or wild things you’ve ever done?

Taking a leap of faith and leaving my job at a boutique advertising agency to follow my passion in health, nutrition, and wellness.  5 years, and countless hours of studying later, I landed my dream job working for a company whose philosophy and mission allows me to combine my personal principles with my professional goals. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.
